Schulze and Brown made their living at the Chicago, Rock Island & Gulf Railway, getting to the area in 1902. They were responsible for surveying a railroad route that brought Fort Worth and Dallas together. They knew that the area would be the perfect site to establish a new town, which led them to the purchase of 80 acres. They acquired this from the Britain family that same year, 1902. The town was named after the author — Washington Irving.
